Demystifying Research Data: don’t be scared be prepared:

Breakout Session 2

RDM and the librarian: what will the librarian's role be and what skills do we need?

1

Copyright/IPR/sensitivity - commercial, ethical etc

Discredited data sets - reputation, legal risk: take down and researchers trainined in evaluation

Formats e.g. music/art images

Preservation/file migration/access

Time periods - for access

Plug training for researchers into existing frameworks e.g. Vitae and Researcher Development Framework

2

Technical skills - subject librarians, repository staff, research staff

Depends on how liaison teams are set up in institution/organisation

Time - haven't gone through the process but still have general skills to offer.

Emphasis - employ a postdoctoral researcher on IR

3

What skills do we need?

Language - vocabulary

Communicate what we can do?

Understanding where our skill set ends and where responsibility lies

Understand the cycle f data

Knowledge and nature of outputs

Political and marketing skills

Obstacles:

Time

Librarian's confidence

Training availability for librarians - RM and process

Getting researchers to understand what we can offer

4

How will we support RD willingly!

Maybe we don't have all the skills but we have an awareness

We need better understanding of research process

Research language - we need to know it

It's important to remember this is an institutional issue, not a library thing

Obstacles:

Do researchers want us to have a main role?

Looking at current models. May be difficult to apply to your organisation
