Demystifying Research Data: don’t be scared be prepared:

Breakout Session 1

Library Roles: where in the RDM lifecycle does the library fit?

1

Strategic and policy role

Audit and collaboration

Re-skilling to support researchers

Expose data for re-use

Use infrastructure already there: UK Data Archive, DCC, Cambridge Dspace Project

2

Initial audit - what are you doing, what do you need [libraries have better overviews than other support services] via interviews, focus groups

Advisory point - for where to go for writing DMPs [need to acquire skills to help actual writing] or reviewing [DCC tool - finders/guidance/requirements], where to deposit [how to describe data (metadata)]

Realise inportance of using it/standards

Inform/begin discussions about ownership of data. Benefits of sharing/re-use. Risks to not having good RDM

Preservation - advising on where, embargoes. [Need significant funding if library to manage hosted data - repositories]

Partners - legal/FOI/university records mnagement, computing/IT, research support office, research support teams within faculties/schools/research groups

3

RDM Cycle:

Finding the data sets

Evaluating the data sets. Research the data sets

Finding access by metadata

Training aspects:

Raising awareness - different departments that can get involved:

Metadata specialists (including repository staff)

Archives

Subject Librarians

IT specialists

4

Be an 'honest broker'

RDM lifecycle:

Initiation:

Our role anyway: collect-preserve-discover

Enthusiasm/will

Our role - knowing about the research skills?

Training:

Train the trainer. Immersive?

Embed in doctoral training programmes and before

Case studies/advocacy/horror stories

Collaborating:

'turf wars'

Library staff roles - levers, requirements, link to fudning, ESPRC. How? Specialists? Subject Librarians? Resources - re-use/alliances if no project funding. What to drop?
